ASUS M4A79 Deluxe Review - PAGE 1
Carl Poirier - Friday, April 24th, 2009

AMD was second in line to make the move to DDR3 memory, with the new Phenom IIs. Intel has been offering chipsets supporting DDR3 since 2007, the first one being the P35. However, AMD is still conservative on DDR2. The new Phenom IIs support both DDR2 and DDR3, compared to the i7 which does not support the older standard anymore.

To use the Phenom IIs with the DDR2 memory standard, one must simply have an AM2+ motherboard which has been updated to support them. This can help reduce the cost of building a computer since DDR2 is used over the newer DDR3. Most manufacturers released these BIOS updates which gives a whole new life to an already aging product.

ASUS is one of them who did refresh many motherboards; the M3A series has been updated since the Phenom II launch. However, there is also a brand new set optimized for AM3 processors: the M4A series. While the M4A79-T is the model that supports DDR3, the M4A79 Deluxe remains with with DDR2. This board will be the main subject of this article, so without losing any more time, let's first take a look at its specifications.
