Help Me Pick A Case And Fans |
|
I've recently torn in to my store bought HP. Here's a link to what it is:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883107398 I just put in a Nvidia 9800gt and a Corsair 650w PSU and not only do I have a significant amount of heat due to the lack of fans in the case, but I have an obnoxious bulk of wires hanging out of the side of my pc. If I tried to put the side of the case back on it would fry the inside for sure. My cpu and gpu temps were a little high for my liking so both sides are off and when I'm gaming I throw the fan in front of it just to be sure nothing gets hurt. I'm definitely looking for a full size case with excellent cooling properties. I've looked around Newegg a bit and this is the one I like the best. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811103011 I'm looking to spend around $100, give or take. I have plenty of extra stock 120mm fans from various computers I have laying around but for how cheap those fans are, if you guys recommend I buy new ones I certainly will. I definitely want to keep my cores and gpu safe and cool. I have nothing but stock fans right now but I'm not sure if they're doing the job well? Definitly looking to expand in the future I guess? I guess the next thing on my list would be a new motherboard and DDR3 ram since I just have 3GB DDR2 at the moment. The reason I want a full case is for max cooling, I don't currently have A/C where my computer resides and it gets quite goddamn hot in here during the summer time which is just about here. Ugh, now I'm repeating myself. Thanks for the help in advance. ------------------- 1994 Oldsmobile Bravada - Slow

No one? Not to be a nit picker but maybe if I spelled it "descktop" I'd get more hits, apparently that works.

Well a better way to improve your CPU and GPU temps would be to turn up the fan speed on the GPU, and to get a better HSF for the CPU.
Unless you're doing something like overclocking, or have a lot of wires you're trying to organize a full tower case isn't going to make a whole lot of difference. It will improve some airflow, but it won't lower temps more then a few degrees in most cases. That being said just get one that you think looks cool. I like the way the HAF, Xaser, Armor, CSX, Stacker, and cosmos all look. If you want to get into liquid cooling the Kandalf is pretty neat as well. The built in liquid cooling system is junk, but it comes with the cool looking case so it cancels out a little bit.

sorry, i was off duty
seriously though, here are some suggestions. if youre going for a high end rig, then spending 150 on this would give you superb cooling...just from the case. if you dont want to spend that much, then you can go for the little brother of the previous linked case here for 130. however, if you want to stay within your budget, you can look through some of these. -------------------

I've read good things about that 932....I'll definitly think about it!
quote Player1No overclocking for me, I'm not psychotic like that, BUT the power supply I bought does have an insane amount of wires for my mid sized case. In fact, here's a couple pics of my case, you'll see the need for a bigger case is definitely in order. ![]() ![]() As you can see, wires aplenty! quoteLooking cool is the last thing I care about, keeping shit cool is my priority. I could care less if it had dildos glued to it, as long as it ran cool. Here are my temps as of this minute, with the wires hanging down like pictured and no fan blowing on it. GPU: 51C Core1: 54C Core2: 54C Core3: 56C Core4: 55C Idle, no gaming. ------------------- 1994 Oldsmobile Bravada - Slow

quote well it would keep would be thieves away from it i guess... anyway, you also need to remember that your rooms temperature plays a big role in cooling. keeping your room cool can significantly affect temperatures, especially when you have a case pumping room air into your system like nobody's business. -------------------

OMG You need wire management.
I can see from those pics that you're still using a stock cooler. You'll see more of a decrease in temps by purchasing a new heatsink, then by purchasing a new case.

bloody hell, i can barely see the cooler. just the hub of the fan. while you are correct, a better case would also work. or how about both? spend 36 bucks on this, and then buy a case with a budget 36 bucks less. its still possible, and the combination would be excellent, especially if the case is roomy, as the linked CPU cooler has a superb airflow rating.

And my temps immediately after a full gaming session with the fan blowing into the case:
GPU: 47C Core1: 65C Core2: 64C Core3: 66C Core4: 65C I definitely need a new case regardless, how the hell am I supposed to fit all those wires into a mid tower case? It's not happening. I assume that new fan/heatsink combo is better than my stock one? Just might have to get me one! Yeah and sorry those pics aren't the greatest, I just snapped em real quick with my phone to show you guys a new case is of the essence. If you need to see more pics of my current setup I can snap better ones, but I'm sure you guys already know what it looks like inside. I suppose I could throw an a/c in my room but eh...it's all the way at my girlfriends house, then she'd have no a/c...Who knows! Although 70-75 degree temps do suck dick inside. ------------------- 1994 Oldsmobile Bravada - Slow

to be honest, your temps arent that bad. theyre of a concern once theyre about 75, and at danger levels if over 80. but thats not to say that you dont need new cooling, because as your computer ages, so will the fans. that wear and tear will start to show with higher and higher temps. how old is your system?

2 Years old this month.
It was all stock until last week when the 9800gt when in because A. The stock 7350LE's fan went and B. I wanted more than 20fps in Left 4 Dead. Then with that came the Corsair 650w PSU and now I have the massive amount of leftover wires to deal with in my mid size case. I know my temps aren't horrible, but I definitely want better. I helped out my cause a little bit by moving my second harddrive to the Media Bay on the front of the computer. Now I have a little more room between the motherboard and surrounding areas for air to circulate. I know I can fix my wire issue by lopping the harness down to what I need, but I just don't feel like doing that, I'd rather do it the right way and get a better case in the process since the stock one pretty much *bleep* for cooling. I have one 120mm fan at the back, 120mm on the cpu and the stock one on the GPU. I'm sure the gpu could be much cooler since the media card/external audio/tv in/out card is only one slot down from it. After a new case and fan(s) I want to get a bigger/better mobo to take advantage of my new stuff. ------------------- 1994 Oldsmobile Bravada - Slow

Alright I know that I've said this a few times, but the best way to improve your temps is to purchase a new heatsink for the CPU.
If you want to only buy a case, get the Kandalf. It is full tower, and comes with a built in water cooling setup. The water cooling setup isn't all that great, and wont outperform some of the better air coolers, but it will do way better then the stock cooler you have now. you should also be able to hide some of the wires behind the MOBO tray.

I'm aware of that, I saw hiigaran linked me that $36 heat sink and added it to my cart. I want a case AND fans, I never said *bleep* fans or heatsinks for that matter.
Why would I get a case that has crappy water cooling and can be out performed by air cooling? I've heard too many bad things about cheap, leaky water coolers. Plus, I'm not overclocking anything so I'm sure a new CPU heatsink combined with a full size case and massive fans on the side/back will alleviate all of my cooling issues. I know the temps aren't horrible, but I definitely want way lower just to be safe. Hiding wires behind the mobo is also out of the question in my current case. For one, there are WAY too many wires to run back there by the looks of it and I'm not taking the case apart and putting it back together if I'm already ripping it apart when I get a new case within the week. The hanging wires don't bother me at all, like I said, glue dildos to the case and it won't bother me as long as my stuff stays cool and safe. ------------------- 1994 Oldsmobile Bravada - Slow

re: Help Me Pick A Case And Fans |

A few things:
1. That water cooler in the Kandalf will outperform the $30 heatsink that hii listed. I've used it a few times and haven't had problems with it leaking. The setups that you here that had leaking problems are the ones, prebuilt setups, such as the Thermaltake Big water. This water setup is only crappy because something like the TRUE can outperform it. 2. You want better temps, but the best way to do that is with a new cooler. 3. Adding fans can be good, but it can also be bad. All you really need in your Case is like 3 good fans. Any more then that and you can severely mess up your airflow, which would cause worse temps then you started with. 4. As for the MOBO tray I was talking about the Kandalf. Many many many other cases have a MOBO tray that you can hide wires behind as well. If you want massive fans then here you go I've used a few of them and they work very well. It's a bit noisy and takes up most of the side panel. As for case, just get one that you think looks cool. Just about every single one of them will improve your airflow/temps.
