Installing HD4890 GPU |
|
Ok so today I bought my new computer and I'm currently putting it together. I put the graphics card (HD4890) in place, and then I noticed it said on the bag it came in "You must connect this card to the power supply". Ok that's fine, I thought. But then I put my PSU in and I've got some PCI-E leads with a 6 pin connector with a 2 pin connector sort of attached to it. Then on the card itself there are two 6 pin slots.
My question is, do I plug in two of the PCI-E cables into both slots and leave the extra 2 pin cables off? Or do i need to connect the extra 2 pin cable somewhere? ------------------- Shortest straw

I'm not exactly sure - but since your PSU has just one 6 - pin connector makes it seem like it may not be enough to even handle that card. Do you know the make and wattage of your PSU? If not sure just open the case and look at the sticker on the side.

i think he has the cables, but hes just got extra pins on them, am i correct? either way, some pictures might help us understand.
im guessing youd be fine if you have extra pins, as long as they are for the video card, and not something else. what does your video card manual say? ------------------- | |

Yeah the PSU is a Corsair TX 750W, and has 4 of these PCI-E cables. I did some reading and I'm 99% sure that I was meant to plug the two 6 pins into the two 6 pin ports, with the 2 pin cables left unattached. Thanks for the help guys.

You are correct, just use the 6 pin connectors and leave the 2 extra pins unattached. The 2 extra pins are for video cards that require 8 pins of power. They just added the 2 pin as an option so they wouldnt have to make 2 cables; one for the 6 pin power and one for the 8 pin power.
