Some advise is pick a board, that is good for the kinda pro tricks you have to beat, or sponsor you have to impress. For example if a sponsor likes rails and you haven't been able to pass it, pick gear with better balance.

If some sponsor or pro leans towards big air and tricks, use the gear best suited for jumps, spinning and maybe speed. It helps a little bit sometimes and definetly puts you over the top for some harder events. Switch I also like to invest in, but I guess that almost covers all the categories. Some events you'll need a board/gear that is good with rails though.

If you need to grind a long rail, lead up to it with some speed, that way you'll grind the rail faster and maybe make where you have to go.

Thats about all the advise I can think of, and practice, practice, practice. Finding snowmen also increases your rank.
