maybe this been addressed already but if this game takes place 10 years after the first then how are you playing as the 'first' big daddy? is it just like the first version before they started creating the ones in the first game?

Yeah, basically. What we've heard already seems to hint that you (the prototype BD) have been in some sort of stasis/storage for some time.

Well a lot of Rapture went unexplored by Jack in the first game, thus whilst he was fighting for the city the Prototype we're playing as now could have just been anywhere else he wasn't. So the first Big Daddy lived through the entire beginning of Rapture's downfall, the first game, the ten years following and now we play as him.
